This pack contains a vast number (I think there's about 20 resources here) of activities, resources, and ideas for the teaching of Robert Swindell's 'Stone Cold.' They should provide an excellent starting point for anybody who wants to teach the book and is looking for some inspiration for individual lesson content/ tasks. The vast majority of these tasks can be adapted for differing age groups/ ability ranges/ needs.
The pack contains resources that focus on the key themes in the book, such as stereotyping, alienation, and homelessness. There are also resources that enable to build individual reading skills, such as inferring and deducing, pulling out quotations, and analysing language. In writing, students learn to think imaginatively and create texts appropriate to audience and purpose.

Perfectly Norman - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills through reading the opening to Tom Percival’s ‘Perfectly Norman.’
The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The text is hyperlinked (first slide) for ease of access.
The session is best suited for children in years 2-3, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.
Patience Collective Worship!
This fun and original collective worship aids children in understanding the value of being patient, through:
Understanding what patience is, and recognising why it is important;
Understanding the relevance and importance of patience in Christianity;
Looking at examples of patient and impatient behaviour (including through personal examples and acting out an adapted version of 'The Tortoise and the Hare), and determining the impact that it has on the individuals and others around them;
Learning strategies to demonstrate patience in their own lives.
The session includes a comprehensive, engaging PowerPoint presentation, hyperlinks to relevant and interesting video clips, and both a PDF and Word copy of the script for the fable. There are also various discussion prompts to enable children to understand how patience is considered in the Bible, and also to guide them in how they can be patient in their own lives.
The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guiding notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!
Aspiration Collective Worship Session! (Primary)
This purposeful and original collective worship session aims to inspire children to be aspirational, through:
-Understanding what aspiration is and recognising why it is important;
-Finding out about successful and inspirational people who have been aspirational, gone on inspiring journeys and reached their goals (examples include Ed Sheeran, Beth Mead and Malala Yousafzai);
-Understanding what the Bible teaches about aspiration through engagement with relevant scripture;
-Demonstrating the power of aspiration through a powerful video - followed by discussion questions;
-Looking at their own lives and considering how they can apply aspiration strategies (e.g. setting SMART targets, etc.)
-Ending with reflection, a prayer and a well-linked hymn.
This worship session is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. It is comprehensive (23 slides in total - there is enough material for a 30-40 minute session or two 20-minute sessions). The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people.
No further resources are required - everything that you need to present the worship is included.
The PowerPoint presentation is fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker just in case. Hope that you find this useful!
